VSF: The Ongoing Quest of Finding the Rules

So I’m having a hard time deciding what rules to use for my upcoming VSF game. I’ve been reading everything I could come across on various forums and I still don’t have a clue on what to use.
The majority recommends (which I predicted) G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T or V.S.F. While I haven’t read any of them myself I’ve read a ton of review of them and they hasn’t convinced me that either of them is the right rules for me. The main issue I have with them is that it’s card driven. I’ve really tried to like the card system in the past but it just seem like I’m not fully compatible with it. G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T also seems a bit to random when it comes to heroes and vehicles.

I’ve also been looking at more generic Colonial rules that I can turn into a VSF setting myself but I’m having the same problem there. There’s so many of them out there, it’s hard to find the good ones. If I’m going with the colonial rout I have two sets of rules that seems good at least. First out is Black Powder from Warlord that I’ve been looking for a good excuse to try, I’ve read if a couple of times and think that it shouldn’t be to hard to use it for my setting. The other one is Colonial Adventures by 2 Hour Wargames and it’s Lemuria supplement.

I don’t have any experience with either of the rules, or any for this period, but I’ve played a lot of ATZ, also from 2HW and I’m not completely sold on their system. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good system and a very unique one but I like to have more control and less rolling on charts.

I would love some help with this, do you have any good rules you can recommend? It doesn’t have be a VSF or Colonial game, I’m more then willing to modify it but I do need a solid rule set to use as a base.
