Comics – Neonomicon

Onto the next comic, this time it’s time for Neonomicon. A 5 issue comic Written by Alan Moore, illustrated by Jacen Burrows and published by Avatar Press back in 2010. In 2012 it became the first recipient of the Graphic Novel category at the Bram Stoker Awards.

When I first stumbled up on this comic I got quite excited. Alan Moore is in my eyes one of the best comic writers we’ve had plus some parts Lovecraftian mythos and it should be good and with Cthulhu turning into one of the geek cultures poster boys together with zombies it should attract more readers.

The comic is set in modern time and follows a criminal investigations that surprisingly takes a turn to the weird side as the investigators gets drawn deeper into the madness that somehow always seem to accompany everything Cthulhu related ;).  The story is very well written and does a good job of capturing the feeling of hopelessness that Lovecraft managed to capture so well in his stories.

Generally speaking I preferre my Lovecraft set in the olden days but Moore does a really good job at bringing it into a modern setting.

I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to comic artists so the name Jacen Burrows doesn’t ring a bell but all the illustrations are very well made and the style works beautifully for a semi twisted horror story.

As for grading it:
Story: 8.5
Art: 9

The only negative thing i have to say about it is that it could have been longer.

I should probably mention that it contains a lot of violence and sex.
