Review: The Old Guy by Romain
- Company: Romain Van den Bogaert
- Scale: 50mm height
- Material: Resin
This review is the second out of three, all reviewing busts from Romain Van den Bogaert. The photos will show some parts being broken but that is not at the fault of the sculpting or casting. It was how they were handled by the postal service here in Sweden. I’m going to ignore those broken parts and focus on the actual sculpting and concept.
The reason for buying this bust isn’t just based on that I like the look and design of it. I felt that it could be a great piece for practicing painting skin. Male skin in particular. Which is something I do very rarely.
As for the first review, I don’t have much to say besides that everything was very well packed. Which I’m happy for, without it I would have had more damage than now.
The sculpting is very nice. There aren’t a huge amount of details as it’s mostly just a head and arms. What you do get a lot of is texture. There’s veins, folds, wrinkles and everything else you’ll find when looking at skin and it works very well.
Another thing I really like is the silly feeling with the facial expression and the extended tongue.
The only thing I’m not ecstatic about is the attached stand as you can see in the photos. I will remove it and put it on a plinth instead, which wont take many seconds.
I feel like I’m repeating my first review but the casting is really good and I could only find two small mold lines to clean up. No flash, no holes, no imperfections, just great textures.
I’m really looking forward to painting this bust. So much that I’m probably going to order two more the next time I order from him. I want one to convert a little bit and one extra to practice on.
